Memorize: Psalm 139:14

I will praise You

because I have been remarkably and wonderfully made.

Your works are wonderful,

and I know this very well.

Read: Psalm 139:1-14Psalm 104

Reflect:

Advent calls us to prepare for the arrival of our Savior Jesus Christ, yet often times our preparation is filled with the stress of planning and busyness. We don’t even take a full day to give thanks, as many race off Thanksgiving evening to find the deals. We race into December facing a to-do list of shopping, cooking, wrapping, and working...so that we can enjoy the birth of God's son?

Let’s think about this – Does our preparation have the wrong focus and the wrong feeling. Psalms 104 & 139 encourages us to pause in the midst of our preparation and consider the question, "Who am I preparing for?" Are we preparing for the arrival of Our Savior, or for the world's expectations of Christmas?

I hope today we choose to prepare for Jesus! When we do, our preparations are less about doing and more about being. We begin to prepare with praise to God for the intimacy that He has with each of us. We wake up each day with less attention on what needs done during Advent and more attention on what's been done through God's power.

Apply:

How does your thinking & planning change when you reflect on the power of your creator…your All-knowing, Ever-present God, who made you and wants an active, personal relationship with you?

Pray:

Father God, today I offer my praise for all that you have done, will do, and continue to do in my life. Help me to prepare for the things that matter and ignore the demands of this Adventseason that pull me away from you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

praise the lord

Read Psalm 148

Praise the Lord!

Praise the Lord from heaven,

you that live in the heights above.

2 Praise him, all his angels,

all his heavenly armies.

3 Praise him, sun and moon;

praise him, shining stars.

4 Praise him, highest heavens,

and the waters above the sky.

5 Let them all praise the name of the Lord!

He commanded, and they were created;

6 by his command they were fixed in their places forever,
and they cannot disobey.

7 Praise the Lord from the earth,

sea monsters and all ocean depths;

8 lightning and hail, snow and clouds,

strong winds that obey his command.

9 Praise him, hills and mountains,

fruit trees and forests;

10 all animals, tame and wild,

reptiles and birds.

11 Praise him, kings and all peoples,

princes and all other rulers;

12 young women and young men,

old people and children too.

13 Let them all praise the name of the Lord!
His name is greater than all others;

his glory is above earth and heaven.

14 He made his nation strong,
so that all his people praise him—

the people of Israel, so dear to him.

Praise the Lord! [GNT]

Reflect:

The Christmas season coincides with the all of the big award nominations.  Only a couple of weeks ago the nominations for the Golden Globes were unveiled.  In a couple of weeks, we’ll hear if our predictions for the Academy Awards are correct.  Then, only a month later, we’ll watch the Grammy Awards Ceremony.

Our culture spends a ton of money every year lavishing praise on entertainers, athletes and other heroes. Yet, even the most heroic sacrifice or deed of man deserving of praise, cannot compare to the praise due to our God. Consider what he has done!

In Psalm 148, the Psalmist focuses on creation. NASA photographs show us wonders in the heavens displayed in unimagined beauty. Scientists spend entire lifetimes studying the stars, and rather than coming close to unlocking the mysteries of the universe, they discover complexities even more mysterious.

Praise the Lord, for such wonders as the heavens. And praise Him for all wondrous things right here on earth.  Consider the birds. God could have created a handful of species of birds and the world would have been interesting. He didn’t stop at a handful; he created 564 different kinds of birds, that we know of.  And what about insects? Scientists admit they have yet to identify all of the species of insects, which right now stands at over 900,000 species. Between stars, bugs and birds, that’s a lot of creation to wrap your mind around.

Apply:

But beyond all created things, consider salvation from Christ. Consider Jesus’ birth, life, death and resurrection. Consider what it means to mankind. Consider what it means to you, individually, personally.

Pray:

Dear Lord, I praise you for your great creation, but most of all, I praise you for your great salvation through Jesus Christ. Amen.
