MESSAGE:THE ONE WHO NEVER CHANGES: HEBREWS 13: 1-25

Jesus Is Our Model, Expressed Through Love (Hebrews 12:2; 13:1)
 
 “Let brotherly love continue.” Hebrews 13:1 (ESV)

Love Is an Action, Not Just an Affection   (Hebrews 13:2–3, 16–18)
 
 “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it." Hebrews 13:2 (ESV)

“Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them, and those who are mistreated, since you also are in the body.”   Hebrews 13:3 (ESV)

Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.   Hebrews 13:17 (ESV)

 Pray for us, for we are sure that we have a clear conscience, desiring to act honorably in all things.  Hebrews 13:18 (ESV)

“Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.”   Hebrews 13:16 (ESV)

Stay Focused, or You Will Drift (Hebrews 13:4–7)

4 Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous. 5 Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” 6 So we can confidently say,

“The Lord is my helper;
     I will not fear;
 what can man do to me?”

7 Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith. 

The Unchanging Christ in a Changing World     (Hebrews 13:8–14)

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”  (Hebrews 13:8)

12 So Jesus also suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify the people through his own blood. 13 Therefore let us go to him outside the camp and bear the reproach he endured. 14 For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come.

1. Where have I drifted?
 Think honestly: Is there an area of my life where I've quietly stopped paying attention to Jesus — a relationship, a habit, a priority — and I've drifted without realizing it?

2. Where is my “love” only a feeling, and not yet an action?
 Which ones apply? Be specific about one you'll act on this week:
 
 Hospitality — Remembering the hurting — Unity — Prayer for others — Generosity

3. What am I anchoring my security to that isn't Jesus?
 
 (Money, comfort, approval, achievement, a relationship, control...)

4. This week, how will I “spend my days” differently because Jesus never changes?

MOVING FORWARD THIS WEEK

Read Hebrews 13:1-25

Following Jesus is not primarily about the sermon you heard on a Sunday — it's about the hours you'll spend this week. Here is what moving forward looks like:

This week, choose one action from Hebrews 13 and actually do it.

• Reach out to someone outside your normal circle (hospitality).
• Check on someone who is suffering, isolated, or forgotten.
• Take a concrete step toward unity with someone you've been at odds with.
• Commit to praying for a specific person by name, every day, for one week.
• Give away something — time, money, or resources — without expecting anything back.

Every day, remind yourself of who Jesus is.

Put a note on your mirror, your phone lock screen, or your dashboard with Hebrews 13:8: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” Let it interrupt your day the way a trail marker interrupts a hiker who's about to miss a turn.

Find someone whose faith is worth imitating (v. 7).

Ask them one question this week: “What has kept you focused on Jesus through the changes in your life?”

Remember: you don't need a bigger moment. You need today.

Author, Annie Dillard writes, "How you spend your days is how you spend your life." Today is not a warm-up for real obedience later. Today is the obedience.
