2. I DON’T HAVE MUCH
3. COME JESUS COME
MESSAGE: BY FAITH: HEBREWS – DON’T LOOK DOWN
14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few. Matthew 7:14 (ESV)
“Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession.” Hebrews 3:1 (ESV)
Are you so busy that you don’t have time for Jesus?
1. BETTER THAN MOSES
Why Moses? Because Moses was the standard.3 For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses—as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself. Hebrews 3:3 (ESV)
3 Therefore, holy brothers,[a] you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, 2 who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God's[b] house. 3 For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses—as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself. 4 (For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.) 5 Now Moses was faithful in all God's house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, 6 but Christ is faithful over God's house as a son. And we are his house, if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.[c] Hebrews 3:1-6 (ESV)
2. THE DANGER OF A HARD HEART
7 Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says,
“Today, if you hear his voice,
8 do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, on the day of testing in the wilderness, 9 where your fathers put me to the test and saw my works for forty years.
10 Therefore I was provoked with that generation, and said, ‘They always go astray in their heart; they have not known my ways.’ 11 As I swore in my wrath, ‘They shall not enter my rest.’” Hebrews 3:7-11 (ESV)
12 Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. 13 But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end. 15 As it is said,
“Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.” Hebrews 3:8-15 (ESV)
3. THE REST WE KEEP MISSING
“So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, for whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his. Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience.” Hebrews 4:9–11 (ESV)
MOVING FORWARD THIS WEEK
MONDAY
Read: Matthew 7:14, Hebrews 3:1-15, Genesis 2:2-3, & Hebrews 4:9-11
Faith Exercise:
The day: August 7, 1974. The place: the South tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. Philippe Petit, a 24-year-old Frenchman, took a leap of faith. He stepped off the edge of the South tower and onto a thin steel cable, barely an inch wide. He then proceeded to walk back and forth, kneel, and then dance on it. When asked how he managed to stay safe, his simple yet profound response was, “I never looked down.” His eyes were fixed on a single point ahead of him. Jesus describes the Christian journey similarly. The book of Hebrews offers the most practical instruction: consider Jesus. Today’s faith exercise challenges you to reflect on the following:
- Am I so busy that I do not have time for God?
- Has my heart become hardened? How does this happen?
- Do I intentionally incorporate rest into my schedule? Why is this important?
Pray:
“Dear Jesus, help me keep my focus on you, regardless of the circumstances I face. Keep me moving forward Lord and to avoid “looking down.” In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Live:
Philippe Petit’s daring walk was not a result of fearlessness; it was the result of unwavering focus. In our Christian journey, we must strive to achieve that same level of focus. How can we accomplish this? First, we must guard against the hardening our hearts, recognizing that today is the day Jesus speaks, not someday. Secondly, we must prioritize rest, understanding that it is not an option, but a fundamental aspect of our design. So, let us not look down, for there is nothing competing for our attention worth more than Jesus, my friends.
Read Hebrews 3:1–4:11 once each day. Each day, underline one phrase that stands out differently than it did the day before.
TUESDAY – CONSIDER JESUS
REFLECT
The word ‘consider’ means to fix your mind on something—not a glance, but a steady gaze. What competes most for that kind of focus in your life right now? Where does Jesus rank among those things, honestly?
RESPOND
Set one specific reminder this week—a phone alarm, a sticky note—that simply says ‘Consider Jesus’ and notice what happens when it goes off.
WEDNESDAY – TODAY, NOT SOMEDAY
REFLECT‘Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.’ What is your ‘someday’—the thing you’ve told yourself you’ll prioritize once life calms down? Has that season ever actually arrived in the past?
RESPONDDo today what you’ve been postponing for ‘someday.’ Even a small step counts—the point is breaking the pattern of postponement.
THURSDAY – THE SLOW HARDENING
REFLECT
A hardened heart rarely happens all at once—it happens through repeated small refusals, like a hose left in the sun. Can you identify a season when your heart toward God grew harder without you fully noticing? What did that look like, and what helped soften it again (if it has)?RESPOND
Choose one small, specific spiritual practice to reintroduce this week—even just five minutes of prayer or Scripture reading before bed.FRIDAY – THE REST THAT REMAINS
REFLECTThe promise of rest still stands—it hasn’t expired. The wilderness generation missed it through unbelief, but the offer remains open. What would it mean for you to actually believe that rest is available to you right now, not just someday in eternity?
RESPOND
Identify one thing you are carrying that you have not handed over to God— something keeping you from rest. Bring it to him specifically in prayer today.
SATURDAY – DESIGNED FOR RESTGod built rest into creation before humanity did a single day’s work (Gen. 2:2–3). Our culture treats rest as something earned after productivity. How does it change things to realize rest was the starting point, not the reward?
RESPOND
Plan one concrete block of rest next week—a few hours or a full day—that includes Scripture, worship, and stepping away from screens and obligations. Put it on your calendar like an appointment.
